I use this company more than others as it has the option for flexible dates and multiple UK airports if you have the luxury of being able to chose your airport.

Google Flights

Although not always the best search engine, I love the option of tracking flights you are interested in. This way you can see if the prices are going to rise or fall. WHo wants to see cheaper flights after you’ve booked?

Here’s a Tip!

If you have just one airline for your flight, book direct. If you are changing airlines, use a good third party. Check the reviews as some of them are shocking.

Transportation

Catching a train to the airport?

Sometimes this is a bit of a nightmare trying to figure out the cheapest option. I generally use Trainline and have now also discovered Trainpal both companies can supply split tickets for a small fee. It is also worth considering a rail card if you are likley to travel three or more times as this will on average pay for itself.

Taxis

Love ’em or hate ’em, they’re normally inevitable at some stage. Ask the locals who they use and download the local app. Depending on your outlook, use Google translate if you find a trustworthy driver and negotiate with him for day trips rather than using the clinical tour companies.

Booking Accommodation

Tips

Check the location as a priority. Do you need to be near the airport or train station? Are you planning to explore the city centre or walk into the mountains after breakfast. If you are travelling out of season, look for accommodation that you like and wait a couple of days for it to reduce in price.

Booking.com

It is now possible to book studios, apartments and villas through Booking.com. It appears that they are listing what was previously typical Airbnb locations. Ideal for a longer stay so you can cook, watch decent TV or simply do your washing at leisure. Small loyalty rewards for regular booking. Booking directly with a property never seems to work out cheaper.

These tours are well planned and can usually pack more into a trip than you can, so perfect if you are short of time or don’t want the hassle of arranging tickets and transport etc. Check reviews for the best tours.
